Fairtrade statement on new deforestation regulations
Reaction to new rules that everyday products sold in the UK do not contribute to illegal deforestation around the world.
Sophia Ostler, Senior Policy Manager at The Fairtrade Foundation, said:
“We are pleased to see DEFRA making progress on the issue of deforestation. Now it’s crucial we hear directly from smallholder farmers to help shape these regulations. We must ensure the new regulations both protect forests and work in practice for producers at the sharp end of climate change, to support a just transition to more environmentally friendly farming practices.”
