How Fairtrade works

While the FAIRTRADE Mark is one of the world’s most recognised ethical labels, it represents much more than a certification label.

More than a label

Here’s what makes the FAIRTRADE Mark stand out:

Rigorous standards & independent checks: We’ve created Fairtrade Standards with farmers and workers to ensure fair prices, safe working conditions, and democratic workplaces.

FLOCERT independently checks the entire supply chain - from farms to factory packaging - to make sure these standards are met.

Local support & community programmes: Fairtrade teams around the world work directly with farming co-operatives, farmers and workers, offering practical training in farm management, health, safety, and sustainability.

They also support local impact programmes on issues like climate change, gender equity and youth leadership.

Connecting producers & businesses: Our UK teams work with businesses to help them source more responsibly, connecting them to farmers and workers who meet Fairtrade Standards and providing advice on sustainable sourcing and supply chains.

Campaigning for trade justice: Fairtrade’s work goes beyond markets. Our community network, together with supporters in schools, universities and local campaigning groups, raises awareness of trade injustice.

We also lobby governments and institutions to create policies that protect and respect farmers and workers.

A global network with local roots

The  Fairtrade system is made up of:

  • Three regional producer networks representing more than 1,930 organisations of farmers and workers in Africa and the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • More than 25 Fairtrade organisations that market and promote Fairtrade products in their countries.
  • Fairtrade International, the umbrella non-profit organisation that creates the internationally agreed Fairtrade Standards and coordinates Fairtrade worldwide.
  • FLOCERT, the independent certifier for Fairtrade.
