Introducing Fairtrade Gold

Fairtrade Certified Gold is the world’s first independent ethical certification system for gold.

All Fairtrade Gold comes from mines which meet the Fairtrade Gold Standard.

This globally recognised marker means that small-scale miners receive a fair deal for their hard work and are supported to make life better for themselves and their communities. It also helps to protect the environment.

From bespoke designs to beautifully crafted gold collections, there is Fairtrade Gold for you. Look out for the FAIRTRADE Gold Mark.

How Fairtrade gold makes a difference

Around 20 million people work in artisanal and small-scale gold mining – it’s one of the most dangerous sectors in the world. Unregulated gold mines can be linked to exploitation, human rights abuses, damage to the environment, and harm to people’s health. But with Fairtrade Gold you can trust it was mined safely and fairly. When you buy Fairtrade Gold you’re supporting transparent and traceable supply chains.

Fairtrade Gold means a fairer deal for miners and their communities Miners sell their gold for at least the Fairtrade Minimum Price, which is 95% of the price set by the London Bullion Market Authority. They also get access to international export markets, so miners usually get a higher price than when selling to local traders. There’s the Fairtrade Premium, too. This is an extra sum of money – US$2,000 per kilo of Fairtrade Gold. Each Fairtrade certified mine elects a committee of miners and workers to decide how to spend the Fairtrade Premium. They make sure it’s used in a way that benefits all miners, workers, their communities and environment.

To meet Fairtrade Standards, mines have to comply with national environmental laws and focus on sustainability. They take responsibility for the places surrounding their mines and respect protected areas. They adhere to strict guidelines on using chemicals, including reducing the use of mercury and eliminating it’s use over time.

Fairtrade Gold is more than just gold, it’s gold with heart. If you care about the people who mine this precious mineral – and the environment they live and work in Fairtrade Gold is for you.
