Fairtrade Foundation response to inaugural speech of the UK’s Development Minister, Kirsty McNeill (on 14 September 2026) and to the announcement of funding for communities to prepare for El Niño

Marie Rumsby, Director of Advocacy at the Fairtrade Foundation, said:

"This is a welcome and timely announcement. As the Minister rightly recognises, climate shocks do not stop at national borders. Our food security, climate security and economic security here in the UK are closely linked to that of farming communities around the world. 

Many of the foods and commodities the UK relies on are grown overseas, and their future depends on farmers having the resources they need to adapt to a changing climate. Supporting communities to prepare for El Niño is therefore an investment in shared resilience that benefits us all.

We would also welcome a greater share of UK climate finance being directed towards adaptation for smallholder farmers. Ensuring that finance reaches farming communities consistently and at a scale that matches the challenge will be essential to protecting livelihoods, strengthening food security and securing supply chains for the future.

The Government is right to emphasise the importance of acting early. But public finance alone will not be enough. If we are serious about building resilient food systems, businesses must also play their part by identifying climate-related risks in their supply chains, supporting farmers and workers to adapt, and investing in long-term resilience. This will require the government to introduce new legislation that requires companies to do so. 

As the UK prepares for its G20 Presidency, the UK has a responsibility to turn commitment into action with a more joined-up approach that combines public investment, responsible business practices and international cooperation. Fairtrade stands ready to work with the UK Government to achieve these goals.”
