Monitoring the scope and benefits of Fairtrade: Africa and the Middle East

This report includes 2023 monitoring data for the Africa and Middle East region, as well as results of the 2024 producer satisfaction survey. Producer organisations in Africa and the Middle East make up 37% of all Fairtrade certified organisations worldwide. By the end of 2023, there were 701 Fairtrade producer organisations in 29 countries throughout the region. More than 1.4 million farmers and workers in the region make up about 74% of the global total in the Fairtrade system. Producers in the region earned €73.6 million in Fairtrade Premium in 2023 to spend on projects of their choice. Cocoa is the highest selling Fairtrade product in the region, making up 67% of the Premium earned in 2023, followed by flowers and plants (9%), coffee (7%), and bananas and cane sugar (4% each).
