Fairtrade adds Türkiye to its list of producer countries
BONN, GERMANY - Fairtrade International is pleased to announce that Türkiye is now a Fairtrade producer country, which means it has been added to the list of countries where raw materials for certified products can be sourced in Western Asia.
In March 2025, the Fairtrade International Board of Directors approved the expansion of the Fairtrade Geographical Scope Policy of Producer Certification to include Türkiye following numerous requests from member organisations to source hazelnuts.
To begin the process, Fairtrade Germany conducted a thorough analysis, in which they evaluated Türkiye’s income per capita using data from OECD-DAC (Development Assistance Committee), its wealth disparity based on the World Bank Group’s Gini index, as well as other economic and social indicators, according to the Human Development Index. The analysis was carried out based on the procedure outlined in Fairtrade’s Geographical Scope Policy of Producer Certification.
In addition, long-term impact for producers in Türkiye and Fairtrade’s ability to support was also considered. The Fairtrade Network of Asia and Pacific Producers (Fairtrade NAPP) has agreed to serve as the supporting producer network.
All future certified producers from Türkiye will follow Fairtrade’s rigorous certification process that begins with contacting our independent certifier FLOCERT. They will have to adhere to Fairtrade Standards, which include social, economic, and environmental requirements.
FLOCERT is ready to receive applications from interested producer organisations. Türkiye was officially added to Geographical Scope Policy of Producer Certification on 1 July 2025.
