Fairtrade's compliance framework is multifaceted, focusing on:

  • Upholding the core values of the Fairtrade membership by adhering to our internal ethical framework, the Fairtrade Organisation Code
  • Conducting rigorous oversight to maintain Fairtrade’s Certification and Licensing System's credibility
  • Implementing compliance structures based on international standards (ISEAL Code of Good Practice compliant

Fairtrade Organisation Code

Purpose and Vision

The Fairtrade Organisation Code set the basis for our compliance management framework that:

  • Enables the implementation of our values, principles, policies, and procedures across the global Fairtrade system.
  • Ensures high standards of behaviour, accountability, and ethics.
  • Drives our mission to make international trade more equitable for farmers and workers.
  • Promotes human rights and dignity.
  • Contributes to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

This applies to Fairtrade International and all its member organisations.

Grievance Mechanism

Fairtrade International has established a robust grievance mechanism that provides a structured approach for handling complaints and allegations and ensures confidentiality and efficiency in complaint management and the protection of whistleblowers. 

The grievance mechanisms intends to offer a possibility for Fairtrade International staff, or any third party connect to Fairtrade - farmer or worker in a certified supply chain, a business partner, a civil-society organisation, or a member of the public - to raise concerns to Fairtrade.

Data Governance

Fairtrade International established a system-wide data governance framework to ensure responsible data sharing practises in the Fairtrade system.

Within it, this Data Governance Policy sets the standard for how Fairtrade Supply Chain Operator data is handled and used in alignment with the Fairtrade mission.

The Data Governance Policy outlines five principles, namely:

  • Fair Value distribution
  • Enabling data rightsholders to be in control
  • Responsible use of data
  • Upholding quality and veracity
  • Ensuring compliant and lawful use

At Fairtrade, compliance is more than a checklist—it's a continuous commitment to creating positive, sustainable change in global trade.

Oversight Mechanism

Consumers have high confidence in Fairtrade and the integrity of our system. In addition to maintaining the Fairtrade Standards for producers and traders, we have a rigorous oversight mechanism for checking that certification and licensing processes are robust and fit for purpose.
