Fyffes: Empowering communities with Fairtrade
Fyffes was the first company to import Fairtrade bananas into Ireland from Ghana in 2003, initially supplying Superquinn. Since then, Fyffes has expanded to supply Fairtrade bananas to most major retailers nationwide. Dunnes Stores, a key Fyffes customer, now sells the highest volume of Fairtrade bananas in Ireland. Empowering banana-growing communities is at the heart of Fyffes’ commitment to Fairtrade. The combination of the Fairtrade Minimum Price—a safety net for farmers when market prices fall—and the Fairtrade Premium—a fund communities invest where it’s needed most—gives farmers greater control over their livelihoods. “We work in some of the poorest communities in the world and are proud to see the positive change this creates” Ciarán Sweeney, Managing Director, Fyffes International SA (Ireland)
Bewley’s : If it’s not Fairtrade, it’s not good enough
Bewleys was the first Irish company to supply Fairtrade in Ireland in 1997. They have gone from strength to strength and now all of the Bewley’s branded coffee is Fairtrade. Bewleys have key coffee growing partners in Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Kenya and many more. Bewley’s believes that, ‘In today’s world, choosing the right path to sustainability can be challenging. While the intentions are often good, not all sustainability efforts have the same impact. True sustainability is holistic—it ensures fair prices, uplifts communities, and protects our planet. Fairtrade pays fair prices and ethical practices for coffee farmers, making a real difference. Without it, sustainability claims often fall short.’ ‘At Bewley’s, we believe great coffee should also do great things. That’s why we’ve partnered with Fairtrade to bring you coffee that not only tastes amazing but also makes a meaningful impact. By choosing Bewley’s Fairtrade coffee, you’re making a simple yet powerful decision to support a fairer world for coffee farmers. Remember, if it’s not Fairtrade, it’s not good enough.’
Aldi: Delivering great value in a sustainable way
Fairtrade is important to ALDI Ireland as it enables us to deliver great value in a sustainable way. ALDI has been sourcing Fairtrade products across our core grocery range, offering customers Fairtrade organic bananas, Fairtrade chocolate, and Fairtrade roses at the very best prices possible. ALDI’s product range is carefully selected and limited to the best quality products at the best possible prices. To pass on cost savings to our customers, we stock fewer product lines than our competitors and avoid selling multiple varieties of the same product. As a result, Fairtrade product lines play a major role across ALDI’s product portfolio. We are extremely proud that we are Ireland’s largest retailer of Fairtrade roses, having sold 2.6 million roses in 2025. Over 90% of our high-quality Fairtrade roses come from Herburg Roses in Ethiopia, a long-standing partner of ALDI.”
