Fyffes: Empowering communities with Fairtrade
Fyffes were the first company to import Fairtrade bananas into Ireland from Ghana in 2003. These were for Fergal Quinn in Superquinn. Since then Fyffes have followed this up by supplying Fairtrade bananas to most retailers in the country. Dunnes Stores, one of Fyffes customers, sells the most Fairtrade bananas here. Empowering communities is the best reason Fyffes can think of to explain why they are proud to work with Fairtrade. The combination of the Fairtrade Minimum Price, a safety net that farmers receive when the market price drops, and the Fairtrade Premium, a fund that the community can choose to spend wherever it needs, is unbeatable for farmers to take control of their lives. ‘We work in some of the poorest communities in the world and are proud to see the changes this creates.’ John Hopkins, Procurement Director, Fyffes Group Limited.
Bewley’s : If it’s not Fairtrade, it’s not good enough
Bewleys was the first Irish company to supply Fairtrade in Ireland in 1997. They have gone from strength to strength and now all of the Bewley’s branded coffee is Fairtrade. Bewleys have key coffee growing partners in Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Kenya and many more. Bewley’s believes that, ‘In today’s world, choosing the right path to sustainability can be challenging. While the intentions are often good, not all sustainability efforts have the same impact. True sustainability is holistic—it ensures fair prices, uplifts communities, and protects our planet. Fairtrade pays fair prices and ethical practices for coffee farmers, making a real difference. Without it, sustainability claims often fall short.’ ‘At Bewley’s, we believe great coffee should also do great things. That’s why we’ve partnered with Fairtrade to bring you coffee that not only tastes amazing but also makes a meaningful impact. By choosing Bewley’s Fairtrade coffee, you’re making a simple yet powerful decision to support a fairer world for coffee farmers. Remember, if it’s not Fairtrade, it’s not good enough.’
