Advancing Responsible Trade: HREDD Awareness Training for Fairtrade Traders and Producers in Java
A collaboration between Fairtrade NAPP and NAPP Commercial Ventures Pte. Ltd.
In an era where ethical trade is no longer optional but essential, Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) stands at the core of responsible global business. What was once a voluntary exercise has now evolved into a mandatory standard — transforming how companies source, trade, and sustain.
For Fairtrade-certified traders and SPOs, HREDD is now embedded in the Fairtrade Trader Standard (Version 2.0), effective from 2025 onward.
The Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) Capacity Building and Training program module under the NAPP Commercial Ventures is designed to equip Fairtrade-certified traders and Small Producer Organizations (SPOs) with the knowledge, tools, and frameworks ensuring they are not only compliant but competitive under the upcoming EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and Fairtrade HREDD Standards (effective 2025).
As global sustainability regulations tighten, companies are now required to integrate HREDD into their business models. This training transforms compliance into a strategic advantage, enabling organizations to strengthen governance, mitigate risks, and enhance market credibility.
The first training collaboration between Fairtrade NAPP and NAPP Commercial Ventures Pte. Ltd, on HREDD Awareness was organised for 24 participants from 06 traders and 06 POs in Purwokerto on October 16, 2025. The training was customised as a participatory and experiential learning event, balancing theoretical inputs with hands-on exercises.

“For us as Fairtrade traders, this workshop was very valuable in helping us truly understand what HREDD means. We realized the importance of having clear benchmarks to identify and address human rights and environmental risks within our business operations—an essential part of our sustainability journey. The training was informative and easy to follow thanks to the clear communication and interactive learning approach. We also came to understand that Fairtrade primarily provides support to producers. Hopefully, in the future, there will be more awareness-raising activities tailored for traders as well, since we too need continued support to effectively implement the Fairtrade Standards.”

“This workshop was a meaningful event, bringing together producer organizations and traders in one space to share experiences and learn collectively about the new Fairtrade Standards. We learned how crucial these new standards are for driving positive change among producer organizations—something not easily achieved by producers alone. We hope to see follow-up initiatives that strengthen shared understanding between traders and producers, leading to real social impact and empowering producer organizations to become stronger and more resilient.”

“The workshop was insightful and enriching, especially for traders, as such opportunities are quite rare. We now see HREDD as a platform for deeper collaboration with our cooperative partners—going beyond product-related issues to also address long-standing human rights and environmental concerns. We look forward to working closely with our partners on HREDD implementation and ensuring they gain the maximum benefit from this collective effort.”
