Dignified Opportunities Nurtured through Trade & Sustainability (DONUTS)

This programme is a four-year human rights-based development initiative led by Fairtrade Finland and Fairtrade Africa. It focuses on enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and agricultural workers in Africa, specifically targeting 12 projects across 6 product value chains (coffee, cocoa, flowers, sugar, vanilla, and wine) in 7 countries

The programme complements the Fairtrade certification in areas where certification alone is not enough to reach Fairtrade’s vision of a world in which all producers can enjoy secure and sustainable livelihoods, fulfil their potential and decide on their future: climate change, child labour and forced labour, deforestation, unfair trading practices, degradation of biodiversity, and discrimination against persons with disabilities, youth and genders. The projects are located in the least developed and fragile countries and support particularly vulnerable groups of people.

Goal and targets

The programme’s Theory of Change (ToC) builds on Dr Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economy model: The ultimate goal is to lift diverse farmers and workers to an economically and socially sustainable life while staying within the boundaries of ecological sustainability.

The programme’s ToC includes three sustainability priority areas with pathways of change:

  1. Social: Inclusive and strengthened civil society

  2. Economic: Farmers’ and workers’ economic rights are realized.

  3. Ecological: Farmers and workers live in harmony with the environment and climate.

The programme’s cross-cutting objectives are gender equality, youth, and vulnerable groups, especially persons with disabilities. The programme strengthens the capacities of the producers’ organisations (POs) and develops the operational environment for civic organisations and trade unions.

 

 

Funding

A strong, diverse and independent civil society lays a foundation for sustainable development, democracy and human rights. MFA Finland’s Programme-based support for Finnish civil society organisations promotes the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the pledge to leave no one behind, grounded in the 2030 Agenda. The activities are also guided by the objectives of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Programme-based support plays a valuable role in the implementation of Finland’s development policy and the Guidelines for Civil Society in Development Policy. Programme-based support granted to Finnish civil society organisations (CSOs) is one of the ways through which Finland implements development policy in order to eradicate extreme poverty, reduce poverty and inequality, and promote human rights. Strengthening civil societies is both a development policy objective and a way to advance other goals of Finland’s development policy. Finnish CSOs and their global networks use programme-based support to strengthen civic space and operational environment for civil societies and to improve civil society actors’ capacity The ministry requires match-funding at the programme level, and Fairtrade Finland has secured around 7 million euros in additional funding from other European Fairtrade organizations and several companies (Alko, Tony’s Chocolonely, Mars, Lidl, Aldi (UK, Germany and Switzerland), Ben & Jerry’s, Chocolats Halba/Coop Group, Nespresso).
