Statement on Tropical Storm Ana and Cyclone Batsirai Aftermath

Fairtrade is closely monitoring the aftermath of Tropical Storm Ana and Cyclone Batsirai in southeastern Africa amid reports that a number of Fairtrade certified farms were directly impacted by at least one of the weather events.

Fairtrade Africa’s Southern Africa Network supports farmers in eight countries across the region, including Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique. Fairtrade farmers in all three countries are reported to have been affected by the storms and Fairtrade Africa is currently assessing the extent of damage on certified farms.

“I want to express my condolences to all those impacted by this terrible disaster. Fairtrade’s local partners are tracking the events on the ground in order to best assess how we can provide the most beneficial and meaningful assistance to affected producers,” said Fairtrade Global CEO Dr. Nyagoy Nyong’o.
