Producer organizations in Africa and the Middle East make up about a third of all Fairtrade certified organizations worldwide: by the end of 2017, there were 535 Fairtrade producer organizations in 31 countries throughout the region. The number of farmers and workers in the region makes up almost two-thirds of the global total in the Fairtrade system. Producers in the region earned €55.4 million in Fairtrade Premium in 2017 to spend on projects of their choice. Cocoa, coffee, and flowers and plants are the highest selling Fairtrade products in the region, followed by cane sugar, tea and bananas.
