Fairtrade International and Leadership Team

Fairtrade International is run in a way that enables its members and other stakeholders to contribute to overall strategy and standard setting. The Leadership Team manages day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the global Fairtrade system.

Fairtrade International employs about 70 staff members at our central offices in Bonn, Germany, and a few others who work for us around the world.

All members and certified producer organizations participate in Fairtrade International’s decision-making through representatives on the Board of Directors and the Fairtrade General Assembly.

Darío Soto Abril, Global Chief Executive Officer

Darío joined Fairtrade in February 2017 as the Global CEO for the Fairtrade system. He is committed to giving Fairtrade a central role in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, delivering maximum impact for farmers and workers across the world.

Darío has a long history of working with producers, civil society, governments and business to achieve inclusive economic growth and social inclusion. He grew up in Colombia before moving to the United States. Prior to joining Fairtrade, he worked for The Trust for the Americas and the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC. Darío has previously worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Bogotá and New York. He is a licensed attorney both in Colombia and in the State of New York. He holds an LLM degree from Tulane University and a Master in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Greg Brown, Chief Operating Officer

Greg joined Fairtrade International in January 2016, and brings with him over 20 years of experience in management and senior leadership roles. Prior to coming to Fairtrade International Greg was the Principal Executive of Corporate Services with CARE Australia.  He has also previously held senior positions in the Australian Commonwealth public sector, including as Director of Corporate Services and Chief Finance Officer at the Australian Film Commission, and Chief Financial Officer at the Federal Court of Australia.  Greg stepped down from the Australian Council for International Development’s (ACFID) Code of Conduct Committee at the end of 2015 after 6 years of service, including 4 years as Deputy Chair.

Greg is a fellow of the Australian Society of Certified Practising Accountants and holds a Bachelor of Business (USQ), Graduate Diploma in Management (AGSM) and a Master of Economics degree (UNE).

Andreas Kratz, Director Standards & Pricing, and Director Global Product Management

Andreas is Director of Standards and Pricing and Director of Global Product Management at Fairtrade International. His work focuses on developing international Fairtrade Standards, including amendments to existing ones. Those standards are a tool for delivering Fairtrade’s desired impacts. Before joining Fairtrade International, he gathered more than 10 years of experience as a quality manager with Ecocert, an organic certification organization. At Ecocert he built up a team of trained auditors and certification staff and installed a quality management system that ensured multiple accreditations.

Andreas holds an Agronomist Engineering degree from Georg August University in Göttingen, Germany. When he is not working, he can be found gardening or enjoying garden harvest with family and friends.

Renate Siemon, Director Human Resources & Legal, and Director Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning

Renate is Director Human Resources & Legal and Director Monitoring, Evaluation & Planning at Fairtrade International. Prior to joining Fairtrade International, she worked for the Deutsche Telekom Group in different HR functions. As a professional lawyer she started off as advisor on labour law in the real estate company of the group. Renate then changed into the group’s headquarter to the department of Human Resources Strategy and Board Member support, being responsible for the development of the group-wide HR strategy. As head of Human Resources Management at T-Systems Business Services she and her team of 15 HR managers supported the leaders of the organisation in all questions regarding their employees, including skills and development, resource management, recruiting, performance management and personnel costs.

Renate was able to use her skills in supporting the leaders in managing the change process with their employees after founding T-Systems Business Services in 2005 from three former companies of Deutsche Telekom AG. Renate studied law at the Westfalische Wilhelms-University in Munster.
