Cadbury Goes Fairtrade in South Africa

There are over 500,000 small-scale producers and farm workers in 23 countries throughout Africa supplying international Fairtrade markets. Until 2008, Fairtrade products were only exported to Northern countries, mostly in Europe, but due to growing demand in South Africa for locally-produced, sustainable products, Fairtrade producers are finding markets closer to home.

Today, Kraft Foods announced that their Cadbury Dairy Milk [plain] bar will be the first Fairtrade certified confectionery available in South Africa. Cadbury’s first step into Fairtrade came in 2009 in the UK and the company has since converted Cadbury’s Dairy Milk to Fairtrade Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. In South Africa, some 1.4 million Cadbury Dairy Milk [plain] bars are sold every year.

“Cadbury Dairy Milk [plain] going Fairtrade in South Africa is a major breakthrough for the whole of the Fairtrade movement in Africa with the first ever Fairtrade chocolate slab made and sold in Africa. The Fairtrade cocoa is from West Africa and manufacturing is taking place in Port Elizabeth at Kraft Foods Cadbury factory,” says Michael Nkonu, Executive Director of Fairtrade Africa.

In addition to Cadbury Dairy Milk, there are now 15 local wineries and one local coffee roaster selling Fairtrade labelled brands in South Africa, and imported coffee, tea and sugar is available. Fairtrade products are currently available in Pick n Pay’s, Ultra Liquor stores, Spars and coffee shops.
