Vibrant Website Puts African Producers at the Forefront

Wondering how many tonnes of cashews are available from the Gbankuliso Cashew Farmers Association in Ghana?

Or how the Iriaini Tea Factory in Kenya reduced their dependence on dwindling wood supplies for fuel?

Then check out, the online home of Fairtrade Africa, the producer network representing Fairtrade certified farmers and workers in Africa. The website was designed to keep producer-members informed and share best practices, as well as inform outside visitors about Fairtrade Africa’s efforts.

The site includes a profile for each producer with space for information on location and history, product availability, how they have used their Fairtrade Premium, and more. Recently, Fairtrade Africa added a best practices section where producers can share practical solutions to challenges they encounter. The first round of case studies covered energy efficiency. Each quarter, a new set of case studies will be added.

“The internet is a fast medium of communication where anyone in the world can see what you have to offer and get in touch with you directly,” said Matt Ng’enda, General Manager of Iriaini Tea Factory in Othaya, Kenya.  “It [the website] is a good platform to share information and interact with different players in the whole chain.”

The website was created with support from the UK Fairtrade Foundation with the objective of increasing Fairtrade Africa’s visibility and providing producers with tools to access the market.
