The world’s first green & Fairtrade hotel floor opened last week at Dorint Hotel Amsterdam Airport. The floor’s forty rooms feature beds made with Fairtrade certified cotton, as well as Fairtrade cotton continental quilts, towels, bathrobes, bath mats and pillows. The flowers, fruit, food and drinks in the minibar, and hand lotion in the bathroom are all Fairtrade certified.

Besides offering guests a selection of Fairtrade products, the rooms are also CO2-neutral and feature sustainability measures like water-saving taps, inbuilt LED lighting and environmentally-friendly cosmetics. Guests get refunds for using public transport, free electric car parking, and half-price hybrid car parking.

“Other hotels have also switched to Fairtrade certified products in recent years. Fairtrade offers a complete package for sustainable development, said Peter d'Angremond, Director of Stichting Max Havelaar, the national Fairtrade organization in the Netherlands. “Through the certification hallmark a consumer knows that his or her purchase contributes towards combating poverty and the sustainable development of smallholders in developing countries. The concept of ‘people & planet by profit’ is also starting to become a commonly-held view in the hotel world. The opening of a fair and green floor in Dorint is once again convincing evidence of this.”
