European Parliament hosts Fair Trade breakfast
The European Parliament hosted a Fair Trade breakfast this October 7th in Brussels. Fifty Members of European Parliament (MEPs) joined in for lively speeches and question-and-answer session, as well as a tasty Fair Trade breakfast including Fairtrade certified products. The breakfast celebrated the Fair Trade achievements of the European Union institutions, in particular the European Parliament, on the occasion of Belgium’s Fair Trade Fortnight.
Event organizers hope the breakfast will raise awareness on Fair Trade within the European Parliament and encourage new MEPs to join the European Parliament Fair Trade Working Group, and send a clear signal to the European Commission for consistent European Union policies on Fair Trade.
The event was hosted by Ms. Linda McAvan MEP, Chair of the European Parliament Fair Trade Working Group. Keynote speeches were delivered by Professor Olivier De Schutter, United Nations Rapporteur on the Right to Food, and Mr. Joao Aguiar Machado, Deputy Director-General for Trade of the European Commission.
