Nuts and Oilseeds
Fairtrade nuts and oilseeds are relatively new within the Fairtrade product range. Most of the nut-producer cooperatives are developing and adapting to the particularities of the Fairtrade market, while others are still in the certification process. Many of the nut and sesame seed producing cooperatives comprise a very large number of small holders (e.g IKURU in Mozambique has 20,000 members, 300 associations).
Fairtrade-certified nut and oilseed producer organizations are located in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Only the Amazon/Brazil nut is regionally restricted to the Amazon region.
In an effort to guarantee a better deal to the most disadvantaged producer groups in the sector, FLO developed nuts and oilseed standards only for small farmers. As long as quality requirements are fulfilled, they can get guaranteed market access through Fairtrade certification.
Existing Fairtrade Minimum Prices and Premiums for nuts and oilseeds are available for the following product categories:
- Conventional and Organic Peanuts
- Conventional Macadamia Nuts
- Organic and Conventional Cashew Nuts
- Organic and Conventional Brazil Nuts
- Organic and Conventional Sesame Seeds
- Conventional Shea Butter (currently one producer)
