Standard for Hired Labour
The following standard applies to organizations which employ hired labour to supply Fairtrade certified products.
Principles underlying this standard
These principles underly the standard for organizations which employ hired labour:
- Management of the Fairtrade Premium. The Joint Body, which includes workers and management, is responsible for the management of the Fairtrade Premium in accordance with Fairtrade standards.
- Freedom of association & collective bargaining. Workers have the right to join an independent union to collectively negotiate their working conditions.
- Working conditions. Working conditions are equitable for all workers. Salaries must be equal or higher than the regional average or than the minimum wage in effect. Health and safety measures must be established in order to avoid work-related injuries.

This standard applies to all organizations which employ hired labour to produce Fairtrade certified products. Employers must pay decent wages, guarantee the right to join trade unions and provide good housing where needed.

Fresh Fruit (including bananas and wine grapes) / Fruta Fresca (incluyendo bananos y uvas de vino) / Fruits Frais (incl. bananes et raisins pour le vin)
Fairtrade Fresh Fruit are all varieties of fresh fruit for which Fairtrade Prices exist. This includes:
- citrus fruits: oranges, tangerines, mandarines, clementines, satsumas, lemons, limes and grapefruits
- ‘oranges for juice’ (sold to be exported to a consumer country and then processed into juice in that country)
- “deciduous fruits”: apples, pears, apricots, peaches, cherries, nectarines, plums
- wine grapes

This Standard includes all types of dried fruit, fruit juices and dried vegetables for which Fairtrade Prices exist. For traders, it also includes fruits which have been processed in the supply chain that were originally certified under the Fresh Fruit Standard.
