A Question of Trust: Global Sustainability Standards Conference 2014

The United Nations Climate Change Conference

11-22 November 2013 – COP19, National Stadium, Warsaw

The 19th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the 9th Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to Kyoto Protocol will be held in Warsaw, Poland from 11-22 November 2013 at the National Stadium.

Together with the Forest Stewardship Council and the Gold Standard, Fairtrade International contributes to the conference agenda with the following events:

The International Fairtrade Towns Conference

 

28-29 September, 2013 at the Clarion Hotel Royal Christiania in Oslo

Fairtrade is an important tool in the fight against poverty and unfair trading terms. Participants from 1260 Fairtrade towns will find out more about the trade related challenges small-scale farmers are facing. How does Fairtrade address these challenges, how can Fairtrade improve and how can we all contribute to fight poverty through trade? 

The Norwegian Fairtrade capital Oslo will host the conference in collaboration with Fairtrade Norway

Africa Fairtrade Convention, Cape Town - 2013

25-29 November 2013, Cape Town 

South Africa's Mother City was chosen to host the 4th Africa Fairtrade Convention, which, from 25th to 29th November 2013, will bring together Fairtrade producers, trade partners and civil society to foster new ethical trading partnerships in Africa.

The event is organized by Fairtrade Africa in collaboration with Fairtrade Label South Africa.  

The programme includes two sessions: days 1-3 with a producer focus and days 4-5 with a business focus. The venue, final programme and costs are still to be announced. Read the press release here.

People-centred businesses: Making Supply Chains Work for Small Producers

This event will create a much needed space for a discussion on the opportunities and risks of the private sector in development. It will introduce the concept of a people-centred business model and the added value it provides within partnerships. Speakers at the event include Fairtrade International CEO Harriet Lamb, along with Fairtrade producers Tadesse Meksela, and Tomy Matthews, and Barbara Crowther of the Fairtrade Foundation in the UK.

ISEAL Conference 2013

ISEAL’s annual conference is the pre-eminent gathering place for the world’s most influential social and environmental standards systems to come together, along with emerging standards, leading businesses, government representatives, NGOs, and other stakeholders that are passionate about finding ways for sustainability standards to scale up their impact.

Sustainable Foods Summit

The 5th European edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit will once again take place in the international city of Amsterdam on 6-7th June 2013. For the first time, a summit will discuss practical methods of reducing the environmental impact of food products by using sustainable ingredients and changing consumer behaviour. How can food and ingredient firms lower their environmental footprints by the use of sustainable raw materials? What can be done to encourage consumers to undertake responsible purchasing and consumption of food & beverage products?

Other topics on the summit agenda include food safety & traceability, sustainability in retailing, local supply chains, marketing claims & mislabelling, water footprints, social impact of sourcing, sustainable brand marketing and tackling food insecurity, social media and responsible consumption. The aim of the Sustainable Foods Summit is to explore new horizons for eco-labels and sustainability. Like previous events organised by Organic Monitor, the summit will bring together key stake-holders in the food industry and debate these major issues in a high-level forum.

Africa Fairtrade Convention 2012

Fairtrade Africa is organising the Africa Fairtrade Convention 2012 in Addis Ababa under the theme “Equal trade, equal development – Strengthening African producers’ role in the value chain”. The event brings together producers and other stakeholders so that all can learn, share experiences, and strengthen networks. Sustainable Foods Summit

7-8 June in Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Sustainable Foods Summit is a series of summits that focuses on the leading issues the food industry faces concerning sustainability and eco-labels such as Organic, Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, etc.

For the fourth consecutive year, the European edition of the Sustainable Foods Summit will take place in the international city of Amsterdam on 7-8th June 2012. Central themes of this sixth edition are sustainable commodities and food authentication. With growing incidents of food fraud, the summit discusses emerging technologies and modern tools to authenticate sustainable foods. Methods of de-commoditising ingredients / foods by sustainable development are also explored. Other topics cover supply chain efficiency, novel distribution models, mobile technology, social impacts and marketing best-practices.

Like previous events organised by Organic Monitor, the summit will bring together key stake-holders in the food industry and debate these major issues in a high-level forum.

18th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP18)

26 November - 7 December 2012, Doha, Qatar
Farmers from developing countries are amongst the hardest hit by climate change and Fairtrade farmers are no exception. Fairtrade producers from Africa, Asia and Latin America will be at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP18) in Doha, advocating for more finance to adapt to climate change and explaining how Fairtrade can be part of the solution.

This side event will discuss the collaboration between FSC and The Gold Standard on land use and forests, combining knowledge and streamlining certification procedures to scale-up sustainable resource management and low carbon development. The Gold Standard and Fairtrade International will explain how carbon markets can work to benefit smallholders and rural communities.

Africa Fairtrade Convention

22-26 November 2011

The Africa Fairtrade Convention is an annual event that provides a platform for African small-scale producers, international traders, policy makers, partner organizations and Fairtrade stakeholders to discuss how better trade conditions can help improve the livelihoods of African farmers and workers. During the Fairtrade Africa Forum experts will present their views on different topics from climate change to best practice agricultural research for African growers. For the first time a Fairtrade and Organic Expo will take place where small-scale producers, traders, partners, service providers, Fairtrade Labeling Initiatives and other stakeholders can meet to build new relationships or strengthen existing ones. The Africa Fairtrade Convention is organized by Fairtrade Africa and will take place in the National Theatre in Accra, Ghana.

International Fairtrade Towns Conference

19-20 November 2011

The conference will take place in Malmö, Sweden. It will be an occasion to celebrate the number of Fairtrade towns worldwide topping 1000 and an opportunity to explore how to move forward “Beyond 1,000 Fair Trade Towns”. The conference is expected to attract about 250 participants from 20 countries.
