About the Mark
The FAIRTRADE Mark is a registered trademark of Fairtrade International (FLO). It certifies that products meet the social, economic and environmental standards set by Fairtrade.
The Mark certifies products not companies. It does not cover the companies or organizations selling the products.
There are strict rules governing the use of the Mark.
What does the Mark represent?
The graphic symbol inside the FAIRTRADE Mark is of a person with a raised arm representing the optimism of producers and linking the everyday determination of people in developing countries with the aspiration of consumers around the world.
The blue sky of potential is connected to the green of growth. This symbol forms the basis of the Fairtrade Brand Mark and the Certification Mark.
The FAIRTRADE Mark was introduced by FLO in 2002. The Fairtrade Brand Mark, which is a blue, green and black circle depicting a person with a raised arm, was introduced in 2011 to help differentiate organizations representing Fairtrade from the symbol that appears on products.
Introduction of the global Mark
The FAIRTRADE Mark is now the most widely recognised social and development label in the world. The FAIRTRADE Mark is owned, licensed and protected by Fairtrade International (FLO) on behalf of its members.
The Fairtrade Labelling Initiatives that founded FLO originally had different labels. In 2002, the international FAIRTRADE Mark was created and since then it has gradually replaced the different national labels. The Mark can now be seen on thousands of products sold in over 100 countries around the world.
Please note: Following the departure of Fair Trade USA from the international Fairtrade system 31 December 2011, we are proud to announce that companies in the USA can use the international FAIRTRADE Mark on products in the USA. Our member Fairtrade Canada has been charged with licensing the Mark in the USA while a new organization is identified.
